Cataracts

Cataract is clouding of the eye’s internal lens and is considered a normal part of aging. Cataracts are delayed by the absence of smoking tobacco, good nutritional habits, wearing sunglasses, good metabolic control of diabetes. Nonetheless, most of our patients by age 80 appreciate the dramatic improvement made by cataract surgery. At Stouffville Optometry, we are pleased to work collaboratively with excellent eye surgeons to facilitate predictable and pleasing visual outcomes for our patients.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease of the optic nerve, the nerve that transmits the eyes visual signals to the brain. In its earliest and most treatable stages, people with glaucoma experience NO symptoms. As part of our Vision for Life strategy, we identify our patients who are at greater risk of developing glaucoma and employ advanced technologies and routine care to make early diagnoses.

At Stouffville Optometry, we use coordinated and judicious use of medications, laser treatments, and surgery to manage this insidious condition. With early detection and treatment, the great majority of our patients can look forward to maintaining good vision despite the condition.

AMD

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the center of the retina, the macula, which serves the very center of vision. It the leading cause of vision loss in Canadians older than age 55. At Stouffville Optometry, we are completely aware of the additional health factors that contribute to AMD, such as smoking, high blood pressure, unhealthy diets, excessive light exposure. As part of our Vision for Life commitment, we identify our patient’s risk factors, use the latest in advanced technology to assist in early diagnosis and preventative and therapeutic care. With prevention and timely care, our patients with AMD can look forward to maintaining useful vision late into life.
